Diversities in the Indian Diaspora

A message from Thierry Di Costanzo, on N. Jayaram ed., "Diversities in the Indian Diaspora: Nature, Implications, Response", OUP, May 2011.
Like Italians, people of the Indian subcontinent have migrated to different countries at various periods of history. Among the immigrants of diverse nationalities worldwide, overseas Indians constitute a sizeable amount. This collection of essays focuses on the 'diversity' aspect of the large Indian diaspora, exploring themes such as the nature and manifestation of institutional and socio-cultural diversities; managing/levelling of diversities and the assertion of Indian-ness; religious, caste, regional, and linguistic associations of the Indian diaspora, among others. It studies diversity within the Punjabi diaspora; Indian-origin communities in Malaysia and Mauritius; Indian Jews in Israel and the the Jain diaspora; issues of caste, Brahminism, gender diversities; and identity construction among diasporic communities.
It will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology, history, politics, gender studies, religion and culture studies, and migration and diaspora studies.
